Object theatre and puppets with live music
Teatro Matita – Matija Solce
(Solvenia)

Still around Europe, between directing and showcasing, Puppet Matija Solce is back, an artist who has always been close to the Festival, who used to accompany his parents since he was a child, the exceptional Papilu Gledališče.
Matija today is certainly one of the most brilliant artists of the new puppetry generation who made Europe their home. His show suggests a hectic, ironic and surreal roundup of short episodes presented to the audience by a moose, while the protagonists are some puppets made out of everyday objects, accompanied by a homemade battery, an accordion and the voice of two actor musicians.

By and with Karin Bayerle and Peter Ketturkat.

(Austria)

Peter Ketturkat many years ago was one of the first artists to engage in object theatre, using and assembling everyday objects and simple materials.
At the Festival, together with Karin Bayerle, he presents his new show dedicated to the world of the circus. With tricks of all kinds, acrobatics, clowns and wild animals, the circus fascinates audiences of all ages. And the artists of the circus are like birds, always in movement, towards the most diverse places. And in this show the magic of the circus is recreated in an arena with reduced dimensions in sheet metal, cork, metallic thread, wood, fabric, pearls and glass.

The bewitched house
By and with Paolo Papparotto
A much-appreciated return to puppet shows, enjoyable and fun even today, which inaugurated the festival’s first edition.
Paolo Papparotto, with great mastery/skill and comedy, presents its version of the traditional Venetian fairytale known as Throw, throw, (Butta, butta) or Giovannin senza paura (Fearless Giovannin), played by Pantalone, Harlequin, Brighella, other characters and…the Devil!
Pantalone buys a small house very cheaply because it is inhabited by ghosts, but if anyone ever manages to spend a whole night in there, the enchantment will break. Pantalone is not afraid, but prefers to send someone else instead of him, because…you never know!

A pair of shoes can tell us more than the person who wears them: through the shape, their use and the care given to them, he tells us where they come from and where they are going.
Shoes are often a defining accessory for all humans, but especially for travellers, for who emigrates and who is forced to travel long distances on foot.
In this show, Yiddish, ironic and funny stories inspired by Isaac B. Singer and Ben Zinet are told. Protagonists are precisely the shoes together with the mythical Polish village of Khelm, famous for the “genius” stupidity of its inhabitants.

Little creatures
(The ramshackle dance of the troublesome but tender inhabitants of the fields)
By and with Gek Tessaro

Artist, illustrator, writer and narrator, Gek Tessaro has been taking his shows around the world for many years, made up of paintbrushes, colours, live drawings, overhead projectors, music and nursery rhymes. They are certainly playmates with such beautiful stories for many children and their parents. At the Puppet Festival, this year he will bring a show that tells the stories of insects and other small inhabitants of the fields who, hidden in the grass, encompass a world of hard work. A joyous and playful narration, sometimes tender, simple and also appropriate for an audience of very young children, but at the same time rich in inspiration in reflection on challenging topics.

Is Mascareddas
Text Walter Broggini, Donatella Pau and Antonio Murru
Directed by Walter Broggini
Puppets Donatella Pau

Scenography Antonio Murru and Donatella Pau
With Antonio Murru and Donatella Pau

Is Mascareddas has been the first company to promote the art of puppetry in Sardinia, realizing refined shows which have become well known all over Europe.
The festival presents Areste Paganòs and the Devil’s Flour, a love story, with all the love story’s classical mechanism. And in addition to this full-of-gags adventure, scenic inventions and comedy bits, in which Areste has to overcome thousands of hardships which hinder the union of the two lovebirds…our hero will only have three days’ time to bring peace and lead the love between the two young lovers to a happy ending. Three eventful days!
The show premiered in 1993 bringing on stage a new theatre protagonist of the Italian animation theatre: Areste Paganòs, created by the fantasy of Donatella Paru and Tonino Murru.

Workhouse of the repertoire of Is Mascareddas, together with the second episode of the saga, Areste Paganòs and the giants, that we will see in Aquileia, it has to its credit more than nine hundred replicas in Italy and abroad, and it has been represented in some of the most prestigious festivals and puppetry theatres.

RETRETE CABARETE
El retrete de Dorian Gray
(Spain)

Ten years of experimentation concentrated in fifty minutes of show in constant movement. A turbine of action, dances, objects and music suggested by a company which, since 2006 attempts to explore puppetry theatre commingling with other worlds among which illusionism, cabaret, photography, cinema, ancient objects and pop culture. The shows, without words, have charmed the audience and young children of three continents.

In this occasion, Marcos Petete and Ezra Moreno virtuously and finely use hands, which are the protagonists that claim attention with a great visual effect, together with objects of different materials and dimensions.

Without words.

Performance event concluding the workshop curated by Virginia Di Lazzaro.
Peculiarity of the event is urban installation, created by the participants (children and parents) together with the curator, which is set up and dismantled in a day. An artistic ‘ephemeral’ work which will be admired and played only by who will be present that day. That is where the name Flash Art originates, mutated by the historical contemporary arts magazine.

The show originates at Emanuele Luzzati’s birth. It begins as a fairytale and follows some life milestones of baby Emanuele’s life, also known as Lele, who wanted to become a painter. The figures, the objects and the scenic elements are elaborated starting from the original drawings and sketches of Emanuele Luzzati and they also accompany the youngest in their knowledge of the artist and scenographer’s work. But the short story is mostly an excuse to play with art, discover theatre and have fun observing the world with “giant eyes”.

CRAZY KITCHEN CREW
By and with Peter Ketturat
(Austria)

Welcome to a crazy world and full of surprises! In which corkscrews, strange mechanical brooms, a potato masher and soup spoons come alive on their own. Everyday objects are transformed into fantastic creatures which decide, with exhilarant and surreal results, to challenge who is bigger and stronger than them!

A silent show, accompanied by live sound effects: whistles, harmonicas, kazoos.

ARESTE Paganòs and the giants
Scenography and direction Is Mascareddas
Text by Betti Pau, Donatella Pau and Antonio Murru
Puppets by Donatella Pau

Two arrogant and bossy boys do bad things in their village, hassling people and ruining things. Tired of this abuse, the inhabitants decide to turn to Areste Paganòs, a hero who, armed with irony and intelligence, will definitely manage to change the bullies’ negative attitude, bringing peace in the village. Inspired by the popular Italian tradition and strongly rooted in the socio-cultural soil of Sardinia, this staging takes up current topics in a pleasantly humorous frame of great visual grasp. Valuable puppets and precious scenic objects emerge created by Donatella Pau.

The puppeteer’s toolbox, the old puppets and those just designed become a stage and the characters of this Pinocchio reveal new meanings. In Pinocchio the material is wood, precious essence which has been accompanying humanity for centuries and is the protagonist of a metamorphosis which creates the magic of the puppets and their stories. Some performance puppets are Anton Jezovšek’s work, important inventor of Maribor’s marionettes, and they are part of Lutkovno Gledališče Maribor’s collection. Pinocchio was awarded as best show and Matteo Spiazzi received the director and visual artist’s award in 2020 at Zagabria’s 53rd International Pif festival.

SLEEPING BEAUTY
CSS Udine
Direction, adaptation and scenes by Fabrizio Pallara.
With Nicoletta Oscuro.

Inside the story of the famous fairy tale a parallel story unravels, another version: it is the view of the seventh fairy who, with her evilness tells the story from a different point of view. The seventh fairy, narrator and witness of good and bad feelings, scary and necessary, can thus reveal all the complexities that each one must face to survive. A wound will open, a scab will cover it, a scar will be a memory on the skin. Without evil, without stumbles and mistakes, this story would not exist, and neither would life with all its wonders.

A woman. A room. A female condom and a world of objects which question life and its relationships, hoping to meet her soulmate on Tinder.
In a world with little certainty, is it possible to protect oneself?
With great ability, Silvia Torri keeps her discourse on two levels for all those topics, also for death: a broken condom would establish the end of the object’s life but also of the lovers’ light-heartedness.
Despite the seriousness of the topics, which touch one’s sexual and emotional life’s most intimate sphere, Torri is able to treat the subject with a fine humour and ease without ever being superficial.

SMALL SUICIDES
(three short exorcisms for daily use)
By Giulio Molnár
Interpreted by Olivia Molnár
(Belgium)

Olivia Monlár exhumes from the abyss of a cult work/play’s archives of forty years ago, a current gem, innovative and surprising. The Trilogy of the Small Suicides uses a bizarre language where the object is not disguised to represent roles and characters of human affairs, but is simply himself, with surprising dignity. The actor does not use objects to express himself, but to help him narrate his story.
Among the suggested situations, there is a vibrant tragedy of a tablet by Alka Selzer, the burning and metamorphosis of Pita, a coffee bean which seduces the Nordic Jörg, and the jeers in front of the mirror of a poetic representation of Time.

“Variation” is a dynamic show, fun and poetic, which fascinates children just as much as adults. The protagonist is Proto, a puppet with eyes like pins and a black thread as a smile. Proto is created on stage, literally in the hands of ManipolAttori, and from the very beginning shows his curious character thanks to which he faces many topics, among which technology, travel, fragility and awareness, ironically and poetically.
On stage only with a carpet, a wooden box and a black background.
The scenographic simplicity and neutrality of the character transport the spectator to small parallel worlds which appear and disappear during the show.

A UNIVERSAL STORY
Created and directed by David Espinosa

(Spain)

Collaboration Jordi Casanovas and Africa Navarro
Performer Jordi Casanovas and David Espinosa

Production El Local Espacio de Creación e Festival TNT

The story of the world told through some of the fundamental stages of humanity’s journey, with just one table, some junk, lights and music. David Espinosa, one of the contemporary scene’s most famous artists of performance art, presents a pièce which is a satire of the so-called official theatre of great dimensions, often arrogant and conformist, demonstrating that even an important topic like history can be told with very little. The result is non-conventional, a portrait of society we live in which contains metaphors which each viewer can individually and personally interpret.

LIVE!
By and with Philippe Lefevbre
(France)

The dreamlike journey created by Philippe Lefevbre, enchanting both for children and adults, has us assist in multiple shadow transformations starting from a simple wine glass silhouette or from an ordinary everyday life object ensemble.
Lefevbre, artist and craftsman operates and manipulates mechanisms which live in the scene, allowing the spectator’s gaze to follow the different paths and to freely concentrate on the artist’s proscenium, on the running contraptions or on the figures which are created, settling and recomposing in choreography inspired by the universe’s motion, nature and humanity.

THIRTYSIX AND FORTYFIVE
By Gigio Brunello
A gallery of 36 oil portraits made in 45 days during lockdown; a precious and extraordinary tribute to the thirty-year anniversary of Alpe Adria Puppet Festival, with guided tours led by the author himself.
“It’s the first time that I find myself writing an information sheet for the Puppet Festival which does not concern a show but an exhibition- states Gigio Brunello- this startles me because during the years, here, many national premiers of my shows have been hosted. These paintings, where stories begin no longer from puppets but from puppeteers posing, intend to be a tribute to the thirty-year anniversary of this precious festival”.

30 YEARS IN 30 SHOWCASES.
Curated by Maria de Fornasari and the Association “Via Rastello”.
A Diffused Museum, a reasoned exhibition of objects and props, notes, reflections and thoughts distributed in 30 editions of the Festival in shop windows of the historical via Rastrello.

A CUSTOM PROJECT
In the puppet theatre everything ends up being useful! Puppet theatre has always been rendered peculiar because of the creative re-use of materials, a substantial component of the artistic process. CTA for its 30 years suggests a gadget-bag like one of the many examples of good practices directed towards environmental and cultural sustainability.

Give me a fabric and I will give you a bag!

But not any bag, one of those that we keep in our wardrobes that we never use again. A fabric with its very personal history contained in its fibres and in its cultural and social values. The bag becomes a narrative object, an idea for the Festival, and puppetry becomes for all of us a gym where to develop and strengthen our imagination. Each one of us will be a spokesperson of the festival and will lead it around the city.
